Word 2002 will not start

Viking Mail

Hi all,

I've been asked to look at a machine running Word 2002 as part of Works
Suite 2004 on Win XP Home.

The machine is only a few months old, and is rarely used. I'm told that Word
had behaved perfectly when last it was used, but when then owner came to
write a letter some days later Word failed to start.

I've looked at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm and
I've deleted normal.dot, deleted the Data key from the registry (which has
not been restored - I assume Word has not got far enough through it's
startup to do that), uninstalled and reinstalled Word while deleting every
Word-related folder and registry key I could find (might have missed a few!)
and set up a new default printer (generic text). Nothing seems to help.

Every time Word starts it gives an error - "Word failed to start last time.
Do you want to start in safe mode?" Either choice produces the same result -
"Word encountered a problem and needs to close." According to the Details
section, the error signature is

AppName: Winword.exe
AppVer: 10.0.4030.0
ModName mso.dll
ModVer 10.0.2625.0
Offset: 000325b9

If I start Word in safe mode, then try to start it again, it offers to
detect and repair errors. This process completes successfully, but doesn't
seem to help.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

TIA

Rob Ashburn.

Just to clarify that: does Word open in Safe Mode. From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. If Word starts OK in Safe Mode as above, it is a problem
external to Word. Did you follow all the troubleshooting tips in the
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm FAQ?

Reinstalling Word (or Office) rarely fixes anything. Did you even try
deleting and reinstalling the printer, making sure that you have the latest
driver for the printer?

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the response. No, Word will not start in safe mode using winword
/a - "Word encountered a problem and needs to close."

Initially, I set up an additional generic text printer and made it the
default. Howerver, I have just unistalled the machine's own printer but it
has made no difference. I can't reinstall it as the printer and it's driver
CDs are with the machine's owner - only the PC is with me.

As regards the FAQ, I have followed it as far as I am able. Stupidly, I had
already deleted to Data key from the registry before attempting to move any
files in the "real" startup path, and since the key has not been recreated I
have no idea where that might have been. I have, however, searched for *.dot
and sent all the resulting files to the recycle bin, so they shouldn't be
available to upset Word. Other than that, I *think* I did everything in the
FAQ.

Any further suggestions would me much appreciated!

Rob Ashburn.

Perhaps - unusually - mso.dll is really corrupt. With all applications
closed, rename mso.dll as mso.bad and go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, select Office and run the Repair process. That will reinstall a
newly created mso.dll. Test again.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for that - I've tried it, but still Word won't start, either in safe
mode or normally.

Any further suggestions would be much appreciated!

There just has to be something seriously wrong with the computer. If
following all the tests in the FAQ has failed, there's little else to try.

You could try the Control panel, Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Word,
and choose the Repair option. If that doesn't work, then it is reformat and
install everything from new.

Hi Terry,

I was afraid of that - I've already got the owner hunting for his driver
CDs. I'll work through the FAQ one more time just in case I missed
anything - if so, I'll post back - but I suspect that a reformat and
reinstall will be needed.

Thanks for your help.

Hi again,

As a followup to my last post, I have just tried the following:

Uninstalled Word and Works
Created a new user account (Administrator)
Logged off and then logged on to the new account
Installed Word

Word starts perfectly on the new account. I logged off and logged back on to
the original account. Word is, of course, available, but still will not
start on the original account.

Does this offer any clues? It will not be a problem to migrate the user's
documents to the new account - the machine is rarely used and there is
little data on it - but I'm curious as to the cause of this issue.

It would indicate to me that either the normal.dot is corrupt or there's an
add-in stopping Word from starting. However, in either case, Word should
start using the /a switch. But as it won't, there's no logic.

If that doesn't work, then it is reformat and install everything from new.

How sad; some of you need backup tools like Norton Ghost to avoid this.

There are MUCH BETTER tools than Norton Ghost for back up images. In fact,
just about anything from Norton (Symantec) can be bettered from other
manufacturers.

I am really concerned that now Symantec has purchased Backup Exec, that may
go to the dogs too.
