Word 2002

For the last few months I've been having trouble opening my Word 2002
program. The windows that come up say:
- Please wait while MS Windows configures Word 2002
- The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable disk
that is not available. Insert the MS Word 2002 disk and click OK.
(I can't find the disk, if I even have one, so I click "Cancel" instead of
"OK.")
- Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required filies. See C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\1033\SETUP.HLP
(I've tried opening that file but it doesn't seem to exist on my computer.)
I've been able to open Word in "safe mode" so still have all my files (thank
God) plus can create new documents and revise/save old ones, but I'm really
tired of having to go through this process every time I start up, and am also
concerned that, one of these days, I won't be able to open Word at all and
will lost my documents. Does anyone out there have the solution for me? Is
Microsoft just trying to get me to buy the latest version of Word?? THANK
YOU for whatever ideas you have.

No, Microsoft is not trying to get you to buy the latest version
(well, they are, but not by sabotaging your current version...).

Windows Installer is telling you that (a) some part of your Office
setup is damaged (that is, some file is missing or corrupted), (b) if
you had the CD and could insert it, then the damage would be repaired
and the messages would stop, and (c) because you don't have the CD and
you click Cancel every time, the damage is still there.

The Setup.hlp file (the Help for the Office installer), if you could
find it, wouldn't tell you any more than what I just wrote in the
previous paragraph. Don't worry about that particular file.

Since the Safe Mode works, the damage isn't in the main part of the
program. It could even be in some part of Office that you've never
used, but the installer doesn't have any way to make that distinction;
as far as it's concerned, damage is damage and must be fixed. :-(

You can try the procedures in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm to see if you
can isolate where the trouble is.

If it turns out you really need the CD, the next step depends on how
you bought Office. If it was a retail boxed copy, visit
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326246 which tells you how to get a
replacement CD from Microsoft. If Office came pre-installed on your
computer, though, you'll have to ask the computer vendor for a copy.
They might or might not have 2002 in stock, since that's now two
versions back from the current one.

Jay - your "MVP" designation probably doesn't stand for Most Valuable Player,
but it should! Thank you so much for answering my entire question, and
within the same day too which is amazing based on my prior experience with
computer questions.

You have assuaged my fear about this problem. I have actually located a
copy of Word 2002 for sale on eBay, plus one other source, so hopefully I'm
on my way to recovery. (Plus I'll try harder to find the original disk which
may still be buried somewhere here in my messy office.)

My faith in Microsoft has been restored, and I will definitely use this
forum with my future questions.

Thanks again!
