Word 2002's Fix Broken Text feature

Can anyone explain to me the purpose of the Fix Broken
Text feature in Word 2002 (Tools, Fix Broken Text)?

It is driving me crazy because it consistently changes the
font of one paragraph style in my document. It changes the
font from CourierPS to Arial and appends "+ Arial" to the
name for that formatted style.
