word 2003 after update, one page only

Can anyone solve this riddle? I'd be most happy if someone could.

I just downloaded a backlog of security updates for windows XP home (this
may be unrelated). Immediately following their installation and rebooting,
Word2003 no long allows me to view more than the first page when I'm viewing
in "print view" (as I always do, but I can see everything fine if in "normal
view." Worse, only the first page of the document will print. What in the
world is going on?

Just read "Suzanne S. Barnhill"'s reply to another post, called "Why would
text appear in normal and not print preview?" That worked. (Somehow, my
documents opened, as default, in two columns, with one of them being too
small to appear on the screen. Weird.) By making sure I didn't have two
columns, but one, the problem goes away.
