Word 2003 application closes when closing a document

I am using Word 2003 and when I close my last document the whole application
closes. I would like the application to stay open. I am also using Outlook
2003 (with an exchange server), and it also happening when I close Outlook -
the Word application also closes.

What can I do to stop the Word application from closing until I exit the
application?
