word 2003 application closes when document is closed

word 2003
-closing document causes the application to close.

I have a new Windows xp computer with Office Professional 2003.

The Word 2003 application closes when I close an open document. I am a Word
Expert and have never had this happen before. I would like to close all
documents but keep the app open.

I have tried suggested ctrl+F4, and file>close.
