Word 2003 automatically creates new "Styles"

We've just migrated to Word 2003 and are having a problem with Word
automatically continuing to create new "Styles" based on individual
paragraph formatting changes. I've already turned off "define styles
based on your formatting", but Word continues to create new Styles -
does anybody know how to disable this "helpful" feature? It's really
putting a kink in our document conformity (medium law firm) to the
point that we're contemplating returning to Word 2000. Thank you!

Lisa,
Look in "Tools" - "Options" - edit tab - there is an option there to keep
the formatting you apply, uncheck this and it should work. If i remember
correctly it is the fifth option from the top in the second column.

Hi Lisa,

You might consider leaving it on. If you see lots of entries in the "Styles
and formatting" pane, it means you aren't using styles properly.
If you try to get rid of the manual formatting ("Select all instances", then
remove the formatting or apply a sensible style), you'll have less problems
in the long run.
Your documents will look much more professional, and will be much easier to
maintain.
