word 2003 autotext menu killed by word redaction add in; how to fix?

i installed the office 2003 add in: word redaction published by microsoft, v
1.0

serves me right.

anyway it hosed up word, and with it, outlook (using word as the email
editor).

when you go to the insert/autotext menu, and select ANYTHING, it gives the
same menu; that menu is exactly the same as the redaction menu.
ALL the old menu entries are missing from the menu.

so i deinstalled the redaction add in; no change
i tried to roll back the system; of course that didnt work, as it wouldnt
roll back (another issue with microsoft xp pro)

then i did a detect and repair on word, no change
then a detect and repair and put the registry back to default, no change.

now what? this is killing me, as i use these things all the time.

I downloaded and installed and I didn't encounter a modification to my
AutoText entries, although I encountered numerous other issues with
it. <sigh> (One was an error upon exiting Word. I'd say it was
substantial when I sent the error report I was asked if they could
gather additional information.)

Anyway, AutoText entries are stored in your Normal.dot so you may want
exit Word and Outlook, search for Normal.dot, rename it, start Word
and see if your AutoText menu is back.

In the meantime, I'll see if I can find anything more for you, the
error report is still transferring even as I type this. lol

thanks for the reply;

i tried that; no help;

to be even more specific to make sure we are talking about the same thing...

the insert/autotext menu has a list of things; the top one is autotext; that
seems to work.
but the rest of the list; attention line/closing/email signature/etc; ALL
have the exact same menu as the redaction menu; in other words it is hosed,
even if i remove the redaction program.
in fact when i remove the redaction program, the redaction menu stays as
well, although it doesnt work.

i dont have any other errors that i am aware of, and the redaction function
seems to work well; in addition my laptop took it fine, and everything still
works.

do you happento know where the attention line/closing/etc etc is stored? i
looked in the registry and it didnt show there.
my next step is to deinstall/reinstall word, but i figured a set registry to
default (offered by their detect and repair) would do the same thing....???

I understood what you are seeing in your AutoText menu.

I downloaded the utility and installed it after I read your post to
see if the same occurred on my computer but I encountered several
issues - however my AutoText menu is fine.

As I noted previously, AutoText entries are stored in Normal.dot. The
utility also modifies your menu bar, the Redaction menu should have
been added at or near the bottom of your Tools menu, but this change
is also stored in Normal.dot. That's why even after you uninstall the
add-in the menus remain but are not functional.

If the Insert/AutoText/AutoText dialog displays the entries then they
are still present - it's just the AutoText submenus that are messed
up. I suspect you customized your menu bar and code the utility uses
to add its menu items didn't accommodate this aspect. (The explanation
for 'why' gets a bit lengthy at this point - so I'll leave it at that.
)

Do you still have the Redaction Add-in installed? If you want to get
Word back to where it was then perform the following:

- Uninstall the add-in
- Rename Normal.dot
- In the Registry navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data

and rename the Data key. Note this will also reset most your personal
preferences stored in Tools/Options and Tools/AutoCorrect so if you
want to rename just the "Toolbars" value first you can.

Seldom does uninstalling/reinstalling correct these types of issues
since the changes you are seeing are considered personal
preferences/options and those are not reset when you
uninstall/reinstall.

Personally, based on what I found after I installed it I'd say there
are several bugs that need to be worked out in the Redaction Tool.
