Word 2003 cannot open files

P

Peter Afonin

Hello:

I've just installed Office 2003 Pro. Now every time I exit Word,
I get this message: "The file Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to
replace the existing file?" I have to click "yes" to exit.

Also, none of my third-party add-ins work with office anymore. When I start
Word, I get messages like this: "Word cannot open this document
template. (C:\Program Files\...\PDFMaker.dot)".

But the worst part is that I cannot open any Word document. When I try to do
this, I get a message: "The file FileName.doc is not available."

I tried to repair, then reinstall the Office. I also tried to delete
Normal.dot - nothing worked. What could be wrong?

I've noticed that the previous versions of Office had similar problems, so
it's not specific for Office 2003. I tried some suggestions, but they didn't
work for me.

I would appreciate your help very much.

Thank you.

Some of these issues sound like Blaster symptoms. The unavailable documents
sound like the KB 328613 issue, which is caused by a confict with the Norton
Office Plug-in (disabling it solves the problem).

Thank you, Suzanne.

I've heard about problems with Norton, but I'm running Symantec AV
Enterprise, and I haven't heard about an Office plug-in. I'll look into it.

Suzanne, I believe this is not my case:

"Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
do not contain a plug-in for Microsoft Office, although the retail version
of Norton AntiVirus does. AntiVirus plug-ins for Office scans Office
documents when they are opened and before they are released to the operating
system. This is an additional layer of protection. The Filesystem Realtime
Protection feature of Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition and Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition will still provide full protection against any
macro-based threat, even without a plug-in for Microsoft Office.'

Here is Office MVP Beth Melton's reply:

Norton CE does not have the Office Plug-in option however if Norton AV was
installed on the computer and then later Norton CE was installed then the
Office Plug-in DLL could still be registered. I found this to be the case
when an OEM version of Norton was preinstalled.

First search your local drive for: officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. As on the
Symantec site, it does not include information on Norton CE but it will
contain additional details on the unregister command if you need them:

Suzanne, thank you very much, it worked! Although Symantec AV CE doesn't
have officeav.dll, it was left from my Norton SystemWorks that I uninstalled
some time ago. After I unregistered it, everything went back to normal.
