Word 2003 compatibility

I have about a dozen Windows XP Professional workstations
installed using Office 97 standard. The users have just
ordered Word 2003 to comply with particular software
requirements.

A few questions,

1) Can I just remove Word from the Office 97 install?
2) Will this version of Word conflict with the other
Office 97 apps?
3) Can I keep Word 97 and install Word 2003 in a
different directory?

You can, or just simply install Word 2003 and allow it to upgrade Word 97.

Office 97 apps?

Installing a later Office component will upgrade some common components, and
install some other new ones. For instance you'll notice Word 2003 using a
different spell-checker than the older Office apps.
3) Can I keep Word 97 and install Word 2003 in a
different directory?

Yes, but Word 2003 will become the default handler for DOC files.
