word 2003 crash - have followed the mvp faq

Word 2003 takes an extremely long time to load, is very slow during any
operations, and then usually refuses to quit without shutting it down via
task manager. Starting Word in safe mode or by running "winword.exe /a"
gets rid all problems. I have followed all directions on the MVP faq
including looking in my startup folders (which have nothing in them) and
deleting the data key. I am on a home computer running Windows XP and I do
not use Norton. I really need this problem fixed because I have college
applications and scholarships that require essays that are due very soon.
Any suggestions?

Hi DJ,

If the /a switch stops the problem, then the cause is one of the three
items that are excluded by that switch: the data key, the Normal.dot
template, or an add-in. You've already eliminated the data key as a
possible cause.

Did you try renaming the Normal.dot template and restarting Word?

Finally, although templates in the startup folder are the most common
type of add-in, there are others. Here are instructions for searching
for all of them:
