Word 2003 Crash on W2K

I have a small office Workgroup set up with four XP SP2 machines and two Win
2K SP4 machines. They are sharing a printer. All machines are running Office
2003.

I recently set up a shared folder on one of the machines and mapped it to a
network drive on all the others. Since I did this, Word 2003 crashes when
opening any document on either of the Win 2K machines. The application is now
completely unusable.

The two obvious things I tried to resolve this issue were to install Word
SP3 and unmapping the network drive. Neither worked.

Any insight you could provide would be much appreciated. I apologize if the
answer is somewhere else on the forum- I am working in a developing nation
and the internet connection speed here is extremely slow!

What happens if you start Word in Safe Mode on the Win2K computers? From
Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word is now in Safe Mode. Are you now able to open
documents from the local drive/ from the network drive?

My suspicion is the printer setup. Word MUST see a locally installed printer
driver: if you are using printer sharing through one of the PCs, this may be
the problem.
