Word 2003 crashed after Live OneCare update

G

Running Ms Office 2003 on Xp sp2 with Live One Care installed.
has been going fine up until this morning but suddenly Word has gone nuts on
me.
I can open existing documents in Windows but cannot edit them, any command
results in 'not responding-end now' shuts down word and documents come back
in the recovery pane. However a 'shadow' copy document has been created in
the folder and this is not recognised as an MS word Doc.
All I have done is run the One Care procedures (including back up)

Should I either run the back up and restore (could I 'infect' thse backed up
docs?)
or reinstall office?

regards

gazza

I don't know what Live One Care is. However, there is a recently released
security update (KB908531) to Windows that is causing all sorts of problems
for people with HP software installed.

See

and http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165. The message gives clearer
instructions for doing what Microsoft is recommending.

FWIW, I followed the instructions in KB918165 and still ended up having to
uninstall the update.

Did you try what Hui recommends?

The KB article is a restatement of what Hui recommends (except for stopping
the HP process, which I didn't try). But I did create the Registry key and
reboot, and that didn't help.

I re-read it and realized it was a stupid question to have asked. Sorry it
won't work for you. Reviewing the security advisory, it looks like regular
prudent practices will also protect the user.

Charles
Many Thanks for the link, this is the source of the problem as following
option2 (Kill HP) resolves the issue-

BUT- hpgs2wnf.exe wont stay away, when I 'open' or 'save as' a document in
word, it freezes and I have to go back to Tskmgr -lo and behold there's
hpgs2wnf.exe again, waving at me from the processes list, so I put an end to
it's fun, 'open' or 'save as' the document completes. Within the same
session, if I repeat the 'open' or 'save as' commands, its back to the
tskmgr. (will it stay like this for ever?)

I'm sure it isnt as bad as that "Here's Johnny" scene in the Shining, it
just feels like it!

Gary

I was having the same problem and spent several hours trying to fix it today.
The registry fix worked for me! Thank You! Thank You!
