Word 2003 crashes intermittently away from network

Apologies if my previous attempt which was too long-
winded message got posted!

Word 2003 on my notebook crashes intermittenly when away
from my home wireless network, going into an endless loop
of crashing, coming up again, offering to post an error
message to Microsoft, and crashing, so fast that I cannot
stop it, but have to kill it in Task Manager. Microsoft's
error report said the problem was my HP 5550 printer
driver and so I downloaded the latest driver from HP and
connected the printer to my notebook, rather than across
the network, and I thought it was fixed, but when I was
using Word away from home recently, the problem returned.

Can anyone suggest a fix? Thanks.

You need to make sure that your printer is set as the Windows Default
printer. Even if the printer is disconnected, Word needs to interrogate the
printer driver when it opens.

Thanks. I have only one printer listed, the HP 5550
now attached to my notebook. I cannot see where I can
make it the default.

Is there any settings I should change before I take the
notebook outside the network?

If Word 2003 does start another endless loop of crashing,
is there any way to stop it so I can change the printer
settings, or whatever?

This is such an obvious bug (i.e. if Word 2003 can't find a
printer it just enters and endless loop of crashes), is
there anything Microsoft is doing to fix it? I have
installed all the updates, except Service Pack 2.
