Word 2003 crashes randomly

How do I get Word 2003 to stop crashing? I have recently installed Word 2003
(and uninstalled it, deleted the Data folder, renamed the Normal.dot) and
reinstalled the Word 2003 program but it still crashes randomly while typing
in the document. The recovered document says it has repairs "Numbered Styles
1". Does that mean anything? Following is the error message I received and
the error signature received after each crash: Microsoft Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 11.0.8106.0 AppStamp: 44f8g192
ModName: winword.exe Offset: 00008659
If anyone can offer a solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate
it.
Thanks

It would indicate that the document is being corrupted. Try using the Open
and Repair option. From the information you have given, it is the numbering
you are using that is corrupt.

I have created a document which I call October_2006 for example and then
every day I open this document and save it under a different name like 103106
so that I can add more information to it. Today I have tried what you
suggested and have modified the October_2006 document to remove any numbering
styles and then did a Repair and then created a new document named 110106 and
that seemed to work while I finished typing my 20 page document but then when
I shut down my computer and restart it and go into my Word document
October_2006 and create another new document 110206 then the crashes start
again. I have looked to see if the formatting Styles is present but do not
see it in the document. Is there somewhere else I need to delete numbered
styles?

Thank you for your help.

If you just use the Open & Repair option, it should indicate where the
corruption is. It would help if we could have a little more information
describing 'crash' such as the nature of the crash: does it just lock Word,
does it close Word, is there an error message, etc.

Terry,
I did the Detect & Repair option through the Help menu and all it said was
that Word was repaired.
I have a new HP computer with Windows XP, Spy Sweeper, Trend Micro PC-cillin
antivirus software and Microsoft Office Suite Professional 2003. I create a
new document in Word and call it Note (for example) and then on a given day I
open this document and Save As 110306Note, using Note sort of like a
template. I have added a custom dictionary and added items to the
autocorrect and autotext. My document is really quite simple in format. I
go to certain areas within the document to add more text and this is when my
document seems to crash. It is never within the same area though and it is
not always while using autotext or in the area where I have a 1. When the
crash occurs in Word I get the error message that Microsoft Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 11.0.8106.0 AppStamp: 44f8g192
ModName: winword.exe Offset: 00008659

Then the recovered document shows that repairs have been made and says
Number Styles 1.

If I delete the Normal.dot or the Data folder in Word sometimes this works
for the day but then when I shut down and restart Word then it seems like it
has not saved those changes and it crashes again.

I hope this information (sequence of events) helps. Is there something I
need to do with autotext or autocorrect? I have deleted the numbering from
my document but this has not fixed it.

Thanks again,

Terry,
Yes, I have an HP photosmart 3300 series installed and when I right click on
the printer icon it shows it is set as the default printer. When I go into
the Properties tab It shows a checkmark in the USB Port, Virtual printer
port. Under Driver is listed the HP Photosmart 3300 Series but the other
options there say Amyuni Document Converter 2.50; HP Photosmart 3300 Series
Fax; and Microsoft office document image Writer Drive.

thanks for the link about What to do when Word crashs. I've used that to
clean out the bad stuff and to delete Normal.dot, but like I said it seems to
work the one time until I shut down and start back up. Then it seems like
something has changed because it continues to crash. I've even done the
clean up and then done an uninstall and reinstall of the Office software and
that does not seem to help. That is why I am wondering if there is something
in the Formatting, autotext or autocomplete that is causing this or maybe an
incompatibility with my virus protection???

Thanks again for getting to me again with more suggestions. In the
meantime, I'll keep working on my old computer with Word 2000 which works
fine :)

Start Word in Safe Mode and test as it sounds like a third party add-in that
is causing the problem. Hold down the Control key and launch Word. In Safe
Mode, Word starts in its default fresh install condition bypassing all
add-in and customizations. Test it like this for a while to se if that makes
it stable. If so, you then need to look to see what add-ins and templates
have been installed by third party apps or utilities.

Terry,
I have recently performed a Full Recovery on my computer and reinstalled the
Microsoft Office 2003 Professional software along with the other
virus/anti-spy ware software and also my printer. I tried this following tip
which I found on site
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?forumID=29&threadID=64695&messageID=1094487 listed under Styles).
In Word 2003 I went to the Tools, Customize and selected the Commands tab.
In Categories I selected the Format menu and removed the "Styles and
Formatting" icon from the toolbar and replaced it with the "Style" icon which
is located further down the list of commands. I don't know if this was
responsible for my program crashing before but so far I have been able to
type with formatting and using Bullets & Numbers 1., 2., 3., etc., and my
system has not crashed. The only thing I have left to try adding is my
autotext and autocomplete. If Word crashes after adding these I will try
checking the add-ins like you suggested. Where do I go to see if anything is
added in?

Thanks so much for all of your time helping me with this issue. I will save
these steps in case I need to start all over.
