word 2003 crashes when I open it. I can open it by going to run and typing in
winword.exe a, so I tried to locate the normal template to rename it as
advised. I can not locate the normal template. I searched normal.dotx and
normal.dotm, and also could not find it under templates in explorer. Please
advise. Also, if I reinstalled office, wouldn't any corrupt files be replaced?

Why are you looking for .dotx and .dotm which are template files for Word 2007?
Look for .dot, check under Tools, Options, File Locations, User Templates
for the directory where Normal.dot is located. These files are hidden files
so ensure you have "Show hidden files and folders" checked in your Folder
Options, Tools on the Windows Explorer window.
Normal.dot file is usually in the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\{userID}\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\User
Templates
Also see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm for
other possible solutions.

Hope this helps
