Word 2003 crashes when Spanish Character is entered

I have 26 WinXP machines in a junior high lab with Office
2003. Our ESL teacher has discovered that whenever a
Spanish language character, like ñ or ¿, are entered into a
Word document, the program crashes with no error messages.
It just vanishes from the screen.

We also use Polish and that causes no problems. Spanish
works fine in all the other programs in the Office suite.
