Word 2003 - Default printer not selected

When I first open Word 2003 after restarting my computer it does not have a
printer selected, not even the default. I am using Office Professional Suite
2003. If I open any of the other programs in the suite the default printer
is selected and prints without having to choose a printer. However, in Word
when I first try to print I receive a message that no printer has been
selected and when going to the print dialog box the printer name field is
blank. How can I fix this so Word 2003 will retain the default printer
setting?

I have this problem if I start Word too soon after booting my computer,
before all the other bits and bobs have finished loading (I think the
problem is caused by something Windows Update does when I start the
computer). I can only conclude that the default printer information is for
some reason one of the last bits to load.

Suzanne, thanks for the tip. I tried waiting a while after opening Word but
I still have the problem. This morning after logging on (after a complete
shut down of the computer) I opened Outlook first and printed a couple
emails, then I opened Word. I didn't do anything with Word but opened Excel,
entered information on a spreadsheet and then printed the spreadsheet. In
both Outlook and Excel the default printer was already selected. I then went
back to Word, opened a file, made changes and then went to printer. The
"Printer Name" was blank -- nothing was selected.

I only have this problem after a complete shutdown. The default printer
information remains after either a log off or restart.

I think the issue is not when you use Word but when you load it, since it
would pick up the default printer information at startup. Whatever it is,
it's a seriously annoying bug.

Hi there,

Did you ever resolve this issue?
I'm having the same issue with one PC on my network.
All the other PCs are fine and, as far as I know, are configured idetically - from the same Ghost image!!

This has appeared as a totally isolated message, so it makes no sense.

Please explain your problem.

Is this a new Word issue?

All my offices were fine, till the beggining of this week, when 2 of the Words does not recognize the default network printer.

All computer as identical, Dell Inspiron, with the same version of all the programs and OS (Win XP).

I have tried to delete normal.dot, reinstall the printer and delete the Word data key (registry).

Any help will be appreciated.

It is not a Word problem. It is more likely the network printer is flaky.
Word must see a compatible, locally installed printer driver to work
correctly.
