Word 2003 disapears when trying to open a document from the taskba

Sometimes when I click on Word 2003 task buttons in the taskbar (bottom of
screen with the Start button on the left) everything disappears, and I have
to reopen Word and use autosave to avoid losing data. This has ceased to be
amusing. I'd really appreciate any help, I feel like my 100,000 word SF
novel may be in jeopardy.
