WORD 2003 does not insert any object. How to fix it?

My WORD 2003 has recently developed a new problem. It neither shows any
embedded object (shows a red square with a X) in a word document nor allows
me to insert one. It includes pictures, power point objects, equations, etc.

I tried following a suggestion to include the equation editor. But, it still
does not work.

I do not recall what might have triggered this.

Can somebody help me.

What happens when you try to insert an object? Do you get an error message?
