Word 2003 does not prompt for save on altered file

I've just installed Office 2003 SBE. Now, if I alter an existing document
or type info into a new one and then click on close or exit (without doing a
"save" first), I do not get prompted to save the file and all changes are
discarded. Has anyone encountered this before? I have tried the repair
option twice, but it has
made no difference. I have also checked the Excel program for this problem,
but it functions properly. I cannot tell if this is just a corrupt install
or something else.
