Word 2003 Encoding Problem

Hi,

Opening a word 2003 doc, I get a dialog that says "Select the encoding that
makes your document readable". No matter which option I select, I get
garbled text. File association is ok, normal.dot is the template...occurs on
multiple systems. Here's a sample of the text. Please help!

The answer is on the first line of the text you showed:

This file is a PDF file, not a Word or text file, regardless of what
the extension may have been changed to. Word cannot open PDF; the only
thing it can do is insert the file into a Word document as an embedded
object.

If the file's extension is now .doc, change it to .pdf and open it
with Adobe Reader.

Ahh, thank you, Jay! I suspected it had something to do with PDFs.
