Word 2003 error when adding unnumbered bullets

If I type some text on several lines, highlight a line in the middle, and
click on the unnumbered bullet icon, Word will get an error.

The problem could have something to do with CRLF or other formatting
characters between the previous line and the highlighted line, or it could be
due to a colon at the end of the preceeding line.

I have reinstalled Office 2003, installed all the latest updates, and still
the error occurs very often. I gave Word permission to report this problem to
Microsoft many times.

By "lines" do you mean individual lines of a single paragraph or separate
paragraphs? Bullets can be applied only to entire paragraphs. If you're
trying to apply bullets to just part of a paragraph, I can see how Word
might get confused.

Thanks, but I tried highlighting partial lines and just a character. The
bullet was applied correctly in all cases. So the problem is not with partial
lines.

If it happens when you click the Bullets and Numbering command then
the error could be due to a little corruption in the Registry. In the
Registry drill down to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\List Gallery
Presets

And delete the List Gallery Presets key. Word will build a new one
based on the defaults upon starting.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should
review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

In this situation you may also want to use the Registry/Export
Registry file command and export your selected branch. That way if you
find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the
deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the resulting
file.
