Word 2003 File/Close closes Word

I have the weirdest thing going on. One staff person has
this problem out of 50. He clicks File/close and Word
closes. I just set him up with a brand new PC, new
Office 2003 install, and all was fine yesterday. I
opened and closed a number of docs with no problem.
Today he informs me it's happening again. I can find no
settings to change to stop this from happening.
Obviously, it's very aggravating. There are other
oddities - the task pane doesn't come up any more, each
new document, regardless of whether or not he has closed
Word, is numbered at the next higher number instead of
starting over at 1. Any assistance will be greatly
appreciated.

Well, I figured out what was going on. He had at least
one unfinished email open almost all the time. This was
acting as his sort of foundational Word document so,
naturally, his doc count kept going up, and when he
clicked File/Close, he WAS only closing out that document
because Word was still open in the form of his unfinished
email composition. Geez, I have pondered this problem
for hours and only stumbled across the solution when I
noticed an unsent, open email in his task bar. Problem
solved.

This is only one of many reasons that people here recommend not using Word
as an email editor. It generally messes up using it as a Word processor and
gives you emails that are not plain text.

Using Word2003 as the email editor is fine (unlike previous versions). You
just have to know that Microsoft kept secret certain behaviour patterns -
such that if Outlook is open and you have opened Word, even though you close
Word, it still stays open but hidden unless the system demands greater hunks
of memory than is free to the system. This is solely a performance
'enhancement' to speed up creating and editing emails. That's why Word will
keep incrementing the blank document until both Word and Outlook have been
closed together. We have many users that leave Word and Outlook running all
day: it really doesn't matter that the blank document increments - as long
as you know why! Some users deliberately dirty the blank document so that it
never closes itself.
