Word 2003: File>Save does nothing

I've installed Word 2003 on a new computer (Windows XP SP1), and I've moved
all the templates, including NORMAL.DOT, from my old Word 2000 system.

On the new system:
For any document based on NORMAL.DOT: File>Save As does nothing.
For any newly created document based on NORMAL.DOT: File>Save does nothing
(doesn't bring up a dialog box at all; no error message either).

This is the identical NORMAL.DOT that worked (and still works) perfectly on
the old Word 2000 system.

On the Word 2003 system: if I delete NORMAL.DOT and let Word recreate it
then I can save documents... but of course I lose all my macros and (worse
still) all my settings.

I have scanned this template file (on both computers) using Norton
Anti-Virus, and nothing is reported. I have tried signing NORMAL.DOT but the
problem behaviour remains unchanged.

What is happening? How can I stop it happening? Is there some conversion
tool I must run?

Additional information:

- the NAV plugin is disabled.

- this seems associated with the Adobe PDFMaker template, because if I
remove that then the problem goes away. There's a reference in the MVP site
that suggests I should upgrade to Acrobat 5.05, but this is impossible for me
because I'm using Acrobat 6.0. Adobe's support site suggests I contact the
manufacturer of the conflicting macros. Following this suggestion I've
contacted myself (as the author of NORMAL.DOT) but I don't know what to say
to myself or what to reply.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Sorry for the confusion: I just did "Help > About" and realised that this is
2002 (installed as part of Microsoft Works) and not 2003.

I would start by uninstalling the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word. I
also wouldn't try using a Normal.dot from Windows 2000. Instead, use the
Organizer to copy your macros to the new Normal.dot. Better still, rename
your old Normal.dot and load it as an add-in (save it in Word's Startup
folder).
