Word 2003 Footnote has Ten (10!) Returns Between Line and Text

And I didn't put them there. Worse, I can't figure out how to make them go
away, nor can I find anything about this issue in the various databases. I've
never seen this before -- has anyone else had this issue?

One thing I did notice, not that it helped, is that while the phantom
returns are greyed out in Normal or Page View, if I open the Header and
Footer they become black. Not accessible, but clearly somehow connected. Very
strange! And, um, not too attractive.

In Normal view, choose View | Footnotes, which displays the footnote pane.
On the toolbar is a single dropdown. Click the arrow and choose Footnote
Separator. Delete the excess paragraph marks and close.

Thanks, but no luck. I'm in Normal view, and I can see the "Footnotes" in the
View menu, but it's greyed out. Do you have a Plan B?

Whoops! Never mind ... I got so frustrated that I deleted the footnote, and
then forgot that I'd done that. Once I put it back in, your solution worked
perfectly. Thanks, Suzanne!
