Word, 2003, format & editing

Just recently everytime I modify a format (text size, tabs, auto-numbering,
paragrahs, etc) the entire document receives the change.

For example:
Step sto add a bullet.
1- position cursor in line
2- use auto bullet
3- whole page then changes to show the auto bullet
4- i then use the edit undo feature
5- the undo feature reverses the "global" change
6- check to see if the text i wanted to indent is still indented.. it
usually is.

this is happening every time i make some kind of edit/formatting change
i haven't changed any default settings
we have a pretty good anti-virus software
is anyone else seeing this?
