word 2003 freezes on trying to retrieve a template

Say, a document is emailed from one workstation to another in a big corporate
network. The document has a template link inside :
\\server\share\cooltemplate.dot.
Here comes a problem : different segments in the network can't negotiate
through most of the protocols due to security reasons . Winword is stuck
trying to retrieve the template on and on with different protocols , with
some enormous timeout (about 10-20 minutes) .
It's a true headache for my users - they have it every time they try to open
any document with a template link they receive from another segment.
I've installed some patch for windows xp that should help ,but it didn't.
I will appreciate your help!

We've tried the fix - it didn't help.
Other decisions talk about post factum repair or using some program/macro.
it is rather problematic to make all our users run some VB program to repair
their attached documents.Moreover , I don't actually need any microsoft help
to code it...
My hope is that there's an administrative workaround

One solution involves a change in user behaviour. All templates to be used
widely should be stored at a network location accessable to all users. If
it is not practical to set up one such location, multiple locations have
to be used with a mecahnism in place to distribute copies of new or
changed templates to these.

For other solutions, consider posting your question to a networking news
group. Dangerously assuming Windows XP, possibly-
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web
microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin

These links will either open the group in your default news reader if one
is set up or configure Ourlook Express as a newsreader for reading and
open the groiup for use. To post, you will have to set up an e-mail
account within OE.
