word 2003 freezes the pc

Damien

Whenever I attempt to use any of the menus in word the pc locks and has to be
restarted. Eg: if i attempt to use the file menu the pc freezes, same for the
tools menu and so on. Word will start in safe mode and run ok. Their are no
3rd party add-ons. The rest of the office programs work fine.
I have installed all the available updates and have uninstalled and
reinstalled several times. I have renamed the normal.dot file unstalled the
printer driver and reinstalled it but still get exactly the same problem. The
OS is XP Media Centre edition with all available patches and updates and the
video card driver if the latest version. If someone could help me with this
it would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Damien

Which safe mode are you referring to? Word Safe Mode or Windows Safe
Mode? If the former then you may have missed an add-in. COM Add-ins
can be difficult to track down.

Did you note the article recommends you dump the entire Word Registry
key? I suspect you didn't since that's a little drastic. :)

If the hang occurs when a toolbar/menu is used then dump only the
Word/Data key since it has the Toolbars value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Word\Data

The others don't really have anything to do with the toolbars/menus.
