Word 2003 Freezes

I have Windows XP Orifessional and Office 2003 Professional, and Norton
Antivirus 2004.
When I work on a document in WORD 2003 and it's on a floppy disk, and I
close the docment and remove the disk. and then go to file/ open to open up a
document that's on the C drive.. the coumpter spins the A drive and keeps on
spinning it and keeps clacking. I try to shut down WORD, but it won't close.
Then I do the end task (It says Word is not responding) and it still won't
close and the A drive keeps clacking and spinning. I have to shut down the
whole computer in order to get it to stop. It never did this before. A
window used to come up to tell me that there was no disk in the a drive, and
now it doesn't come up at all. All it does is look for a disk and spin and
make noise. I tried to do the repair and detect in WORD and that didn't help.
Should I uninstall Office 2003 professional and reinstall it?

This all started when my son was working on a Word document and he closed it
and did file/open and the open box came up and he changed his mind and
removed the disk and clicked cancel. The computer clacked and spinned the a
drive until we had to shut down the computer. Did he break WORD? I have a
new Dell 8400 computer. Please help me.
