Word 2003 freezes

On my wife's computer she has Windows XP Home Edition and recently we
installed Office 2003. Previously, we had Office XP. Now when she attempts
to type anything in Word 2003 nothing appears and she gets a message that
Word is not responding. However, she can type anything in Notepad or Wordpad
without any problems. Previously, she would start typing and it would take
several seconds before anything appeared on the screen. Now, nothing
appears. Any suggestions or guidance on where to get help would be greatly
appreciated.
