Word 2003 Freezing Opening Files Outside Of Program

When opening Files from outside of the program (double clicking on a file in
explorer) Word will open up and run a virus scan on that file and lock up.
But if I open up that same or any other file from within the program
(file..open....) It works fine.

The lock up freezes the whole computer from doing anything...even shutting
down.

Control, Alt Delete does not work either.

this does this on any DOC file on my computer.

I am running Microsoft Office 2003 Proffessional Edition. My OS is XP Pro
w/SP2.

Any ideas out there?

If this is Norton Anti Virus, deselect the preference option for the Office
Plugin.
