Word 2003 freezing randomly

Hello,

We are experiencing a very strange Word 2003 behavior. Suddenly, the
application is almost freezing, there is an extremely slow response
from the OS (Win2K) while the task manager does not show anything
abnormal. There are no *not responding* entries.
This happens randomly and is not reproducible. It occurs mostly during
the switch between the documents or documents and Internet Explorer 6
windows.
After closing Word 2003 the performance turns back to normal.
Unfortunately it seems as if the whole OS is not responding any more so
users cannot continue their work.
We would appreciate very much if anyone could help us out.

Yes, those PC's have 1 GB RAM, it happens randomly on about 500
machines.
