Word 2003 hangs and svchost.exe

Word 2003 has been repeatedly hanging up randomly
(usually during cut/paste operations). Sometimes I can
edit this particular document for hours, and other times
just for minutes. Application Mgr says that Word is "not
responding". I noticed that the program svchost.exe is
always taking 99% of my CPU after these Word hangs
occur. Waiting five minutes in Word (hoping it will
clear up) does not yield any positive outcome - have to
kill Word and restart my editing (at least the temp files
seem to recover well).

I am running XP with SP1 and all the latest patches /
updates from Windows Update. Any ideas on what could be
causing this errant behavior that seems to relate to
svchost.exe?

This sounds like the sort of behavior I saw with the Blaster virus. See
