Word 2003 hangs when opening rtf

After double click on the rtf file, a blank Word window opens, then just
blinks between task bar and window header. Can minimize and restore, but
that is about all. CPU goes to 100%. Cannot kill or close the application.
Each ctrl-alt-del starts multiple task managers? Task manager never fills in
the window. The only way to stop is the reset button. Currently Windows XP
Sp2, all office 2003 updates. installed. I am running Norton anti virus.

Try disabling the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus.
