Word 2003 header margin symbols - how to turn them off

[Mindy, the confused one]

I fat fingered something and all of a sudden I have brackets displaying to
the left and right of my headers and footers (I assume to show where the
margins are) when I open a new Word 2003 document in print layout view.

What did I turn on and how do I turn it off? I have tried Tools - Options -
View and can't find anything that seems to work. It's not a hide/show option
either. What am I missing?
