Word 2003 hyperlink problem

I have Office 2003 Standard Edition (Upgrade version) running on XP Home
SP2.

This problem concerns hyperlinks to destinations within the same document.
Let's say I have two hyperlinks, call them LinkA and LinkB, pointing to two
destinations (headings, say) elsewhere within the document. Call them
HeadingA and HeadingB.

If I click on LinkA, I surely enough jump to HeadingA. And then if I go
Back, via either the Web toolbar or Alt+LeftArrow, I duly return to LinkA.
So far so good. Now let's say I click on LinkB and jump to HeadingB. Still,
so far so good. But now if I try to go Back, I return not to LinkB but to
LinkA. And so it will be for the rest of the session. No matter what other
hyperlinks I follow, I will always go Back to LinkA.

In other words, whatever hyperlink I follow first seems to get "stuck" as
the Back-to location for any other subsequently-followed link.

I've done a Detect and Repair and a Re-install, to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks.

Gretchen,

I am having difficulty reproducing your issue.

Does this happen with new documents?
Has this ever worked properly?
Do you have an Office Service Pack installed or hotfix?

Larry,

Thank you kindly for your reply.

Yes, this happens with new documents. A brand new document created in Word
2003 will exhibit the symptoms I described. I specifically tested this to
rule out any possible incompatibility of Word 2003 with documents created
under my old Word 2000.

No, I don't think it has ever worked properly. I noticed the problem right
after I installed Office 2003.

As I mentioned, my Office 2003 is the Upgrade version which I installed
"over" my Office 2000. Might that be a source of trouble?

I do not believe I have a Service Pack or hotfix. Word Help|About says
"Microsoft Office Word 2003 (11.5604.5606)" Can you tell from that? Is there
a relevant hotfix?

I am wondering if doing a complete Uninstall (Remove)of Office 2003 and then
Reinstalling might help. But two questions arise: (1) Will I be able to
reinstall the Office 2003 Upgrade version since (I assume) my old Office
2000 would be gone? (2) If I uninstall Office 2003 will I lose my Product
Activation?

Thank you again for helping.

Hi Gretchen:
FWIW, my version of Word 2003 is 11.6502.6408 SP1, so it appears to be a later
build. I don't have that problem with my hyperlinks. You could go to
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx
& check for updates.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem as described by Gretchen Sonntag,
also using Word 2003 SP2 (11.5604.5606).
Then, after reader the comment of Phil Rabichow, I stepped back to
SP1 (11.6359.6360).
Now the backward link between destination bookmark/heading and originating
hyperlink works just fine.
Is there a patch on SP2 correcting this error?
