Word 2003 in office 2000 standard saves in wordpad documents

i am a home user and am running Windows XP, and my Word version saves only in
wordpad format. It is Word 9.0 in Office 2000 standard. Was there a fix for
this that i missed in my automatic updates? or do i just have a defective
version?
