Word 2003 incorrect characters

Weird thing. Typing quotes in Word 2003 produces a space
and a double bracket " »". Also typing colon or
semicolon produces each correctly but with an extra space
before them.

Any one have this experience and know the cause/solution?

Have you checked that all the Office and Windows language and keyboard
settings are correct? Does it happen with ANY font?

You've got the language set to French.

That appears to have been the problem. When I changed it
from French to English, the characters were normal. I
don't quite understand why French would require a space
before the colon, or use brackets instead of quotation
marks. What's odd is that when I changed it back from
English to French, just to see if I could reproduce the
problem, the characters were typing normally.
