Word 2003 increases memory usage after inserting Excel chart

After copying and pasting a couple of Excel charts into Word 2003, Word stops
responding. I've opened task manager and noticed that memory usage goes to
100% and stays there.

This problem appears to be progressive. After a few copy and pastes, the
memory usage goes to 100% for a few minutes, after another few pastes, it
stays at 100% longer, after a few more word becomes non-responding and word
must be shut down from task manager.

The document is roughly 1.5 MB and includes several different charts from
Excel.

My PC has 512 MB of RAM, pentium M, WinXP SP2

Copy/Paste isn't a good way to get any graphic into Word. It is much better
to use Insert, Object or Insert, Picture or Insert, Excel Chart. What I
normally do to keep file size down is create the chart in Excel, then copy
and paste it into a graphics utility (such as the free IrfanView utility)
and save the chart as a jpeg (or PNG or GIF depending on final quality
requirements), then use Insert, Picture to insert the chart. The result is a
tiny, easily manageable document.
