Word 2003 locks up when opening large documents

Documents created with Word 2003 that include .jpg photos get corrupted when
the filesize exceeds about 19 megabytes in size.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have a fix?

After Word locks up when loading the file, and I ctrl-alt-boot out of the
application, I am able to successfully edit earlier versions of the same
document (without locking up). It has something to do with the size. My
work-around is to divide the document up and save them as single pages.
