Word 2003 locks up when typing, have to Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close

I use Word 2003 for work. As I am typing, it will lock up and then will not
respond and/or recover so I can recover my documents and then continue
working. I usually have to type Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close the program and
then have to retype whatever typing was lost from the last time I save the
document. Very frustrating.
Any possible solutions to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
