Word 2003 Mail Merge

I am using XP and trying to use the mail merge to access an excel file. It
does not recognize the excel format.

If you check Word Tools|Options|General|"Confirm conversion at open" and try
re-connecting, you should see a choice of different connection methods,
probably including OLEDB, ODBC and DDE. If you choose DDE or ODBC, what
happens?
