Word 2003 Markup view

I only have about 5 out of 70 users on Office 2003 so I am a little lost on
this one. A user asked how to get out of and stay out of the Markup View.
When you open his Word and go to View on the toolbar, The option of Markup
is always selected. He wants it not to be. Is that possible? Is it only
effective if the document you are viewing has track changes on? Help?

Thanks.

This is due to a security option that will check a document for
tracked changes and display them upon opening the document. IOW, when
the Markup command is selected it means, "I want to view any markup
that may be present in a document".

Now, you can turn the security option off (Tools/Options/Security) but
it's not recommended. Doing so can result in inadvertently sending
documents out with unaccepted tracked changes which, for some, has
been a little embarrassing. ;-)

Personally, I would ask him more about why he wants to change the
behavior in the first place. If a document doesn't contain tracked
changes then the fact that the Markup command is selected is
irrelevant - so you open the View menu and yes it is selected.

I suspect most of his documents contain tracked changes, it is
displaying when he opens the documents, and he wants to suppress the
view of the markup. Track Changes has been an area of
confusion/misunderstanding for some so if that's the case then you may
want to make sure he understands how Track Changes works and that the
only way to remove the tracked changes is to accept/reject them and
hiding them from view on the screen does not remove them from the
document nor do all documents contain tracked changes. This only
occurs if Tools/Track Changes is enabled.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Thanks. I briefly explained to him why it is the default and since he sets
security guidelines for our company, I left the decision up to him as to
whether or not I should change it for him. I think it's probably some kind
of annoyance only because he didn't understand the why behind it.
