Word 2003 Mysteriously closes

T

Tom Toews

I have Office 2003 installed on XP SP1. Virus software is McAfee VirusScan
v4.5.1 SP1. My scenario is this:
1. I have Word open along with another program.
2. I close all documents open in Word leaving only the application itself.
3. Click minimize for Word.
4. Work with other program.
5. Click the Word icon on the task bar to maximize Word.
6. Word closes. No error messages. It just closes and I have to reopen it.

Any ideas. I've tried Detect and Repair along with shutting down the various
items running in the Tray.

Here is Office MVP Beth Melton's answer to that question:

I suspect you've encountered a bug in the Handwriting Recognition
services. Try the following:

- Open your Control Panel
- Open Regional and Language Settings
- Select the Language tab
- Click Details
- Remove Handwriting Recognition

Let us know what you find! :)

Suzanne,

Thanks! That worked. Since I don't use handwriting recognition that much, I
won't worry about it. I do use voice recognition though.
As a warning to others just posting to this newsgroup, I made the mistake of
including my real e-mail address yesterday with my post and this morning I
had about 20 spam messages of the same variety. I had about 10 emails
sending out the bogus Microsoft Update Patch email. Amazing!!

I have another scenario when Word will close. If Word is open and I click
reply to a message in Outlook, Word will close. Word is set up as my email
editor. I suppose it might have something to do with that. Not sure.

Yes, if only other things in life were as efficient as the SWEN spammers . .
