Word 2003 open delays (slow open and close with 100% CPU usage)

I thought I would post this for the benefit of others out there who encounter
the same problem, and also so that perhaps somebody at MS sees this and fixes
it:

I have been experiencing EXTREMELY slow Word 2003 startup. This includes
composng a new e-mail from Outlook with Word set as the editor. When I hit
the new mail button or launched word, it would take over 30 seconds to load
word even when it was completely cached in memory. During this time, Word
would consume all the CPU time it could allocate. It would also take a
considerable amount of time (thought not quite as bad) to close Word, during
which time it also ate up all the CPU.

I first noticed this today after doing a complete OS reload yesterday, and
after having loaded all of my applications. In troubleshooting, I searched
the web and usenet and tried all of the suggested solutions (made sure it
wasn't corrupt registry entry by trying it from a newly-created user, made
sure it wasn't AV, renamed the normal.dat file, etc., etc., etc.). I had
installed SP1 for Office 2003 before I ever launched word for the first time,
and had installed a few apps that added plug-ins to word before I ever
launched word for the first time (namely, acrobat plug-ins and the stuff that
MS Student adds). I eventually tried removing and reloading Office 2003, but
problem persisted.

Eventually, I discovered that this was due to the "Learning Essentials for
Microsoft Office" that was installed as part of Microsoft Student. Namely,
this added a menu to Word called "Student Tools." After removing Learning
Essentials, word started in less than a second (when already cached in memory
from the drive). Reloaded Learning Tools, problem came back, so I finally
got rid of it permanantly. For those wondering, no I had never installed MS
Student before, prior to this OS reload.

I was unable to find any information about this being a known problem (I
only came across one usenet posting of somebody who had a corrupted menu with
multiple instances of "Student Tools"), so I'm posting this hoping that it
helps out somebody else, and maybe MS could look in to this and fix this
problem with Learning Essentials.

I think I could live with waiting 30 seconds for word to load, but I
*DEFINITELY* can't wait 30 seconds every time I want to compose a new e-mail
(and no, I'm not willing to use the built-in Outlook e-mail composer).

Update:

Just saw that Office 2003 SP2 was released. Tried re-loadeding Learning
Essentials then applied SP2, and problem did NOT go away. Removed Learning
Essentials permanatly (for the second time :).
