We have documents that we open, change a few things, and resave, year
after year. We recently upgraded our workstations (to WinXP, Word 2003,
3Ghz), and now many of these documents are opening VERY slowly. For
example, a 2 page letter takes over 4 minutes. During this time, Task
Manager will say that Word is Not Responding. Once loaded, I can Save
As to a new Word document and it is no better. Saved to a .rtf file, it
still takes one minute. Saved to a Word97 .rtf file or a .txt file, it
opens in less than a second.
On our previous computers (Win2000, Word 2000) these documents took 25
seconds to open - annoying, but tolerable. My home computer (WinXP,
Word 2002) opens them in 22 seconds. It doesn't matter if they are on
the network or local drive. Some of these documents may have been
started in Word 97 or earlier, some I think are newer, but may have
started from a template of the earlier vintage. Any idea what is going
on, and how to fix them in less that 5 minutes each?
