Word 2003 PC won't open my Word 2008 files

We have two PC's in the office, both with Word 2003 on them. One opens
the files from my Mac just fine. The other refuses to open the same
file, saying:

"Word experienced an error trying to open the file."

Followed by meaningless suggestions. There is no error number, nothing
in Help and nothing in the online files.

Compatibility check complains about some image transparency and font
substitutions, but it does that anyway and the file opens fine on the
other machine.

Suggestions?

Do they both have the necessary converter (downloadble free from
Microsoft's website) to read Word 2008 (.docx) files? If not,
resave the documents from your Mac as .doc files.

We are not using docx files.
