Word 2003 - Problem replacing a style

Hello --

In word 2003, SP3, Vista:

I've created a bullet style and a numeric style using the List Style option
in Create New Style.

When I try to replace one instance of the bullet style with the numeric
style, Word replaces ALL instances of the bullet style. Because these are
list styles, there is no Automatically Update check box, so that's not the
problem. I can't find this addressed anywhere.
