Word 2003 Problem with Symbols

I just installed Office 2003 Pro under Windows XP. When I select
Insert/Symbol the Symbol menu is displayed but you cannot select any
symbols using the mouse. One character is highlighted and you can
navigate using the arrow keys but the mouse simply will not work.
However, the mouse does work with everything else on the menu (buttons,
scrollbar, etc.)

Is this the behavior everyone else is seeing? Is there a known workaround
for this problem?
